I f you’re invited to a work event but have no clue what you should wear, allow us to help with some basic Dos and Don’ts that you should keep in mind regarding your dresses for work events.
You know the dress code, but just because it says cocktail, should you be dressing up in a red and green and blue and yellow sundress and wearing stilettos? Probably not the best idea. Your outfit highly depends on the practicality of the event, so make sure you’ll be comfortable in what you wear.
Don’t Wear Jeans
This is probably the most heavily contented “professional” attire, but it’s for the better if you ditch it at home, trust us. You will not look well-dressed or professional if you show up in jeans, you will look like a young child going to their first adult party. Some places may consider jeans to be business casual, but it’s better to let them go altogether and wear dress pants instead.
Do Wear Clothes With Pockets
Just because it’s an event doesn’t mean you’re allowed to carry a humongous purse on the side. Try to wear clothes that have pockets in them, and we don’t just mean the ones for fashion purposes, we mean the ones that serve a purpose. The pockets must also be easily reachable and fit in a reasonable amount of stuff, such as napkins/tissues, medicines and band-aids, and perhaps some wet wipes too.
Don’t Wear Rainbow Colors
There’s nothing wrong with multiple colors in your outfit, but don’t go for something very bold and bright that makes you look like a summer sorbet or an ice cream sundae. Try to wear something that either has a muted palette or is in tune with the classic black, as these colors will allow you to blend into the crowd while also looking presentable.
Do Keep Your Shoes in Mind
We know you want to wear your most expensive pair of heels, but is it comfortable? If the event is a charity ball or a gala, you’ll probably be on your feet the entire night trying to socialize and get to know everyone. Heels aren’t the most comfortable shoes to walk in, so make sure that whatever you wear is a durable pair that will last you throughout the night without giving you blisters.
Don’t Stuff Your Purse
If you plan on carrying a purse, make sure it is small and sleek. Purses should ideally fit in your hands and not cause much strain, but that means your purse has to be small and not humongous, otherwise it wouldn’t fit in your hands. Carrying a small purse automatically means not having a lot of space, so if that’s the case, try not to put too many things in your purse.
There are two main reasons for this. First, it will ruin the shape of your purse/clutch and make it look all wobbly and ugly. It might not even be comfortable to hold. Secondly, when you reach inside your purse to find something during the event, you probably won’t be able to find it because there are so many things in there. Lastly, and this is uncommon, but your purse may spill, and your things might be all over the floor.
Do Bring Just the Necessities
This event won’t last forever, so no matter how much you think you may need three shades of lipstick and your entire makeup wardrobe for “touch-ups,” you really don’t. Stick to the essentials, and if you need any health-related items, don’t forget them. These can include an EpiPen, an inhaler, or anything similar of the sort. Also, keep a painkiller in your purse in case you don’t feel too well during the event.
Don’t Bring Extra Clothes
Trust us, you won’t need them. Select an outfit that has layers, so you can withstand a wardrobe malfunction if it comes to that, but please do not bring an extra outfit to a work event. Not only will you not have time for that, but it will also ruin all your photos, and you’ll be asked too many questions about the outfit change.
Do Wear Lasting Perfume
An integral part of your dress and your outfit is the perfume you wear, so be sure to pick out a scent that will last the entire night. Wear something soft, but not so soft that it gets lost within the first hour of reaching the venue.
Now that you’re aware of all the Dos and Don’ts, we hope that it’s easier for you to pick out dresses for work events. It can be tricky walking the line between appropriate attire and fashionable attire, but if you keep these tips in mind, you’ll be alright!
